Best Time to See Dolphins in Hilton Head: A Seasonal Guide

The best time to see dolphins in Hilton Head is almost any day you visit. At Hilton Head Dolphin Tours, we share the water with Atlantic bottlenose dolphins every month of the year. They are true Lowcountry residents, not seasonal visitors. That said, some seasons and some times of day give you a better show than others. Here is the full breakdown so you can plan your trip around the best possible sightings.

The Best Time to See Dolphins in Hilton Head: The Short Answer

Dolphins live in these waters year-round, so sightings are strong in every season. If you want the single best combination of active dolphins, comfortable weather, and calm water, the best time to see dolphins in Hilton Head is late spring through early fall. For the calmest water and the fewest crowds, book a morning dolphin tour. Families often combine dolphin watching with other kid-friendly activities around the island.

Dolphin Watching Season by Season

Spring (March to May)

Spring is when activity really picks up. As water temperatures climb from the mid-60s into the 70s, dolphins spend more time at the surface, and you see more jumps, tail slaps, and close boat passes. March often brings lighter winds than winter, which means glassy mornings and easy spotting. It is also shoulder season, so the boats are less crowded and the pace is relaxed, ideal for families and first-timers. Spring blooms bring bonus wildlife too: seabirds, rays, and the occasional manatee around Broad Creek and Pinckney Island.

Summer (June to August)

Summer brings the warmest water, the longest days, and the most consistent sightings of the year. Dolphins are active and feeding throughout the day, and the long daylight opens up beautiful evening and sunset cruises on top of the morning trips. This is peak season, so it is the busiest time on the water and the time to book ahead. Mornings and evenings beat the midday heat and afternoon wind.

Fall (September to November)

Fall is the sleeper pick. The water is still warm from summer, dolphin activity stays high, and the summer crowds thin out, so you get great sightings with more room on the boat. September and October in particular give you warm-water conditions without the peak-season rush. A genuinely underrated time to visit.

Winter (December to February)

The dolphins do not leave in winter. Hilton Head’s pods stay resident all year, so sightings continue through the cooler months. Activity is a little calmer and the air is cooler, so layers help, but you also get the quietest, most private trips of the year and often the most dramatic Lowcountry light. For visitors who want dolphins without a single crowd, winter delivers.

Best Time of Day to See Dolphins

In any season, mornings win more often than not. Here is why:

  • The water is calmest in the morning, and less chop makes fins and blows much easier to spot.
  • Dolphins tend to feed actively after the overnight rest period.
  • Morning temperatures are comfortable on the boat in every season.

We run morning tours regularly, and many guests tell us they saw 10 to 20 dolphins before noon. Late afternoon and sunset is the other strong window, especially in summer and fall when the evening light is at its best. The time to avoid, when you can, is midday in summer, when heat and wind are at their peak.

Tips for the Best Sightings

  • Book early morning or late afternoon to avoid midday wind.
  • Dress in layers, especially in spring, fall, and winter mornings.
  • Bring binoculars and a camera. Dolphins often approach the boat on their own.
  • Ask about the weather policy when you book. We run in most conditions unless it is unsafe.

What You’ll See on the Water

A typical trip on Calibogue Sound and the surrounding creeks puts you near resident bottlenose dolphins along with herons, pelicans, rays, and the wide salt-marsh scenery the Lowcountry is known for. Our private boat tours run for up to 6 guests, so it is your group on the boat with a real local captain, not a crowded party boat. Before heading out, make sure you bring the right gear for a comfortable day on the water.

Ready to Plan Your Trip?

Whatever month you visit, the dolphins are here, and we guarantee sightings. If we do not see dolphins on your trip, we will offer a rain check or a partial refund. Pick the season that fits your trip, book a morning if you want the calmest water, and we will take care of the rest.

Captain Brody

At 14yrs old I started SCUBA diving and found a love for the water. Little did I know how much that would directly affect my life.

At 18 I started off working in kitchens and racing Soling sailboats on Wednesday nights and weekends in Lake Michigan. After seven years in Wisconsin my culinary career brought me to South Carolina where I continue to cook, fish and boat as often as possible.

In the past year I've decided I want to spend my time sharing my knowledge and love for the ocean with all.

Captain Brody was an amazing tour guide for our dolphin boat tour! We saw so many dolphins!!! His knowledge of dolphins combined with his easy going personality (we had to change our time several times due to weather and schedule changes on our end) made for the perfect outing! His tour is the best kept secret in Hilton Head!

He is a great tour guide. We did the shortest dolphin tour and he is so knowledgeable about the waterways and wildlife. We saw lots of dolphins and once you see them pop their head up, you start to see them all over. I booked another trip for the fall and cant' wait.

We went on the disappearing island tour this week and had a great time! We’ve done many dolphin tours before but this was our first time booking a private tour. Definitely worth the money! The boat ride was fun and comfortable, the island was a neat experience, plus we got to see lots of dolphins. The best part was we could take our dog, and I truly think it was the best day of his life!

This was our family’s third time booking with this dolphin tour company, and it just keeps getting better. From the moment we stepped on the boat, the crew made us feel welcome and taken care of. They’re organized, friendly, and clearly love what they do. What really stands out is their knowledge. They don’t just point out dolphins and move on. They explain the behaviors, the feeding patterns, the migration routes, and how the local ecosystem all works together. Our kids enjoyed it! You can tell the team genuinely cares about protecting the marine life and educating guests. Each trip has felt a little different, which makes it exciting every time. We’ve seen playful dolphins swimming alongside the boat, learned about local birds and sea grasses, and come away with a deeper appreciation for the water and everything in it. We’ll absolutely be back again. It’s become one of our favorite family traditions.
