Best Time to See Dolphins in Hilton Head 2026: The Spring Guide

At Hilton Head Dolphin Tours®, we’re lucky to share the water with Atlantic bottlenose dolphins year-round—they’re true Lowcountry residents. But spring (March–May) is when things really start to heat up. Calmer winds, warming waters, and increasing dolphin activity near shore make March one of the most rewarding months for sightings.

Why Spring Is Prime Dolphin-Watching Season

  • Resident pods stay active: Hilton Head’s dolphins don’t migrate far. They’re here every month, but spring brings more surface activity—jumps, tail slaps, and close boat passes—as water temps rise from the mid-60s°F into the 70s.
  • Calmer conditions: March often has lighter winds than winter, creating glassy mornings ideal for spotting fins and blows from afar.
  • Fewer crowds than summer: Shoulder season means more personal space on the boat and a relaxed vibe—perfect for families or first-timers.
  • Bonus wildlife: Spring blooms bring more seabirds, rays, and occasional manatees to Broad Creek, Pinckney Island, and nearby estuaries.

Best Time of Day in March

Mornings win almost every time:

  • Calmest water (less chop = easier spotting).
  • Dolphins are more active feeding after overnight rest.
  • Cooler temps (mid-60s to low 70s) feel great on the boat. We run morning tours regularly—many guests tell us they saw 10–20 dolphins before noon.

Our Favorite March Routes & Tours

  • Private Dolphin Tours: Up to 6 guests, customizable timing/routes. Ideal for families wanting flexibility. From $275. https://www.hhdolphin.com/boat-tours/
  • Family Dolphin + Crabbing Adventures: All-ages fun—spot dolphins then try crabbing on Disappearing Island. Safe, educational, unforgettable.
  • Sunset Cruises: Longer daylight means beautiful evening sightings + Lowcountry colors.

Tips for the Best Spring Sightings

  • Book early mornings or late afternoons—avoid midday wind.
  • Wear layers (spring mornings can be cool).
  • Bring binoculars and cameras (dolphins often approach boats).
  • Ask about weather policies—we go out in most conditions unless unsafe.

Ready for Your Spring Dolphin Adventure?

March 2026 is filling up fast—especially around the Wine & Food Festival (March 20–28). Don’t wait for summer crowds. Check availability and reserve your spot. We guarantee sightings, and if we don’t see dolphins, we’ll offer a rain check or partial refund—your memories are that important to us.

See you on the water!

At 14yrs old I started SCUBA diving and found a love for the water. Little did I know how much that would directly affect my life.

At 18 I started off working in kitchens and racing Soling sailboats on Wednesday nights and weekends in Lake Michigan. After seven years in Wisconsin my culinary career brought me to South Carolina where I continue to cook, fish and boat as often as possible.

In the past year I've decided I want to spend my time sharing my knowledge and love for the ocean with all.

This was our family’s third time booking with this dolphin tour company, and it just keeps getting better. From the moment we stepped on the boat, the crew made us feel welcome and taken care of. They’re organized, friendly, and clearly love what they do.What really stands out is their knowledge. They don’t just point out dolphins and move on. They explain the behaviors, the feeding patterns, the migration routes, and how the local ecosystem all works together. Our kids enjoyed it! You can tell the team genuinely cares about protecting the marine life and educating guests. Each trip has felt a little different, which makes it exciting every time. We’ve seen playful dolphins swimming alongside the boat, learned about local birds and sea grasses, and come away with a deeper appreciation for the water and everything in it. We’ll absolutely be back again. It’s become one of our favorite family traditions.

Amazing experience. Captain Brody was so welcoming and informative. Picked us right up at the dock, took excellent care of us and we saw so many dolphins! Highly recommend this tour. It’s private so no fighting crowds to see the dolphins and one of the best prices around!

We had an incredible time with Captain Brody. He was easy to schedule and accommodating, then once we got out he was very patient and fun with the kids. They ended up catching some awesome fish and had a blast doing it. Absolute high point of the entire week!
