Atlantic bottlenose dolphin spotted on the best dolphin tour in Hilton Head with Captain Brody

The Best Dolphin Tour in Hilton Head: Read This Before You Book

Hilton Head has no shortage of dolphin tours. Pontoon boats packed with strangers, 90-minute loops that barely get you out of the marina, and captains who have been doing this long enough to phone it in. Captain Brody runs something different. Private trips only, maximum 6 guests, 22 years on these waters, and he is on every single boat. If you are trying to find the best dolphin tour in Hilton Head, here is what actually matters before you book.

Why Hilton Head Is One of the Best Places to See Dolphins

Hilton Head sits inside a network of tidal creeks, salt marshes, and open sound water that Atlantic bottlenose dolphins have called home year-round for as long as anyone can remember. The Calibogue Sound, Broad Creek, and the waters stretching toward Daufuskie Island are some of the most dolphin-active stretches on the East Coast. You are not hoping to get lucky out here. You are going to where they live.

What makes the viewing so consistent is the ecosystem itself. The marsh system feeds bait fish into the creeks and sounds, which keeps dolphins close and active. On most trips you will see multiple dolphins, often in groups, sometimes feeding, sometimes just cruising alongside the boat.

What Makes the Best Dolphin Tour in Hilton Head

Not all tours are the same. Here is what separates a good trip from a forgettable one.

Private versus shared: On a shared tour you are on a boat with strangers, moving on someone else’s schedule, and competing for the best rail spot. On a private trip it is just your group and the captain. You stop when you want, stay longer when something interesting is happening, and nobody is rushing you back to the dock.

Captain experience: Knowing where dolphins are on any given day takes time on the water. Brody has 22 years of it. He knows the tides, the feeding patterns, and the spots that do not show up on any map.

Group size: Smaller is better. Fewer people means a calmer boat, less noise, and better sightings. Brody keeps his trips private with a maximum of 6 guests.

Trip length: A 90-minute shared tour gives you a taste. A 3-hour private trip gives you a real experience with time to explore, stop, and actually be out on the water instead of just passing through it.

What You Will See on a Hilton Head Dolphin Tour

One reason families choose Hilton Head Dolphin Tours is our dolphin guarantee. Captain Brody has spent more than two decades navigating these waters and knows where dolphins are most commonly found throughout the year.

Atlantic bottlenose dolphins are the main event but they are rarely the only thing out there. On most trips you can expect to see:

  • Playful Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, often in pods of 3 to 8
  • Coastal birds including egrets, herons, pelicans, and osprey
  • Salt marsh landscapes and tidal creek systems
  • Harbour Town Lighthouse and landmarks only visible from the water
  • Daufuskie Island in the distance across the Calibogue Sound

Depending on conditions and the time of year, some trips also turn up loggerhead sea turtles, rays, and the occasional shark.

The Best Time of Year for Dolphin Tours in Hilton Head

Dolphins are here year-round but summer is peak season for a reason. Longer days, calm water, and warm temperatures make June through August the most comfortable time to be on the water. June in particular hits a sweet spot before the full summer crowds arrive, which means more availability and a quieter experience overall.

By mid-June tour times start filling fast as summer vacation season kicks into full gear. If you are planning a trip in June, July, or August, booking early is not just a suggestion. The best time slots go first.

Add the Disappearing Island to Your Trip

The best dolphin tour in Hilton Head gets even better when you combine it with a stop at the Disappearing Island. This is a real sandbar that rises out of the Calibogue Sound at low tide and vanishes again when the tide rolls back in. The only way to reach it is by boat, and it is only above water for about 90 minutes a day.

Families who add this to their trip consistently call it the highlight of their entire Hilton Head vacation. You get the dolphin sightings on the way out and a private sandbar to explore when you arrive. Depending on conditions, kids sometimes find sand dollars, starfish, and shark teeth.

Sunset Dolphin Tours

If an evening on the water sounds more like your speed, the sunset dolphin tour runs the same private format with the added bonus of a Lowcountry sunset over the sound. Dolphins are active in the evening and the light makes for some of the best photos of the trip. It is a popular pick for couples and groups who want something a little more relaxed.

How to Book the Best Dolphin Tour in Hilton Head

Every trip runs private with a maximum of 6 guests and Captain Brody on board for every single one. No strangers, no packed boats, no compromises on timing or pace. Summer dates fill up fast. If you have a specific date in mind, lock it in early.

Captain Brody

At 14yrs old I started SCUBA diving and found a love for the water. Little did I know how much that would directly affect my life.

At 18 I started off working in kitchens and racing Soling sailboats on Wednesday nights and weekends in Lake Michigan. After seven years in Wisconsin my culinary career brought me to South Carolina where I continue to cook, fish and boat as often as possible.

In the past year I've decided I want to spend my time sharing my knowledge and love for the ocean with all.

Captain Brody was an amazing tour guide for our dolphin boat tour! We saw so many dolphins!!! His knowledge of dolphins combined with his easy going personality (we had to change our time several times due to weather and schedule changes on our end) made for the perfect outing! His tour is the best kept secret in Hilton Head!

He is a great tour guide. We did the shortest dolphin tour and he is so knowledgeable about the waterways and wildlife. We saw lots of dolphins and once you see them pop their head up, you start to see them all over. I booked another trip for the fall and cant' wait.

We went on the disappearing island tour this week and had a great time! We’ve done many dolphin tours before but this was our first time booking a private tour. Definitely worth the money! The boat ride was fun and comfortable, the island was a neat experience, plus we got to see lots of dolphins. The best part was we could take our dog, and I truly think it was the best day of his life!

This was our family’s third time booking with this dolphin tour company, and it just keeps getting better. From the moment we stepped on the boat, the crew made us feel welcome and taken care of. They’re organized, friendly, and clearly love what they do. What really stands out is their knowledge. They don’t just point out dolphins and move on. They explain the behaviors, the feeding patterns, the migration routes, and how the local ecosystem all works together. Our kids enjoyed it! You can tell the team genuinely cares about protecting the marine life and educating guests. Each trip has felt a little different, which makes it exciting every time. We’ve seen playful dolphins swimming alongside the boat, learned about local birds and sea grasses, and come away with a deeper appreciation for the water and everything in it. We’ll absolutely be back again. It’s become one of our favorite family traditions.
